Static Dread: The Submarine Timmy, Algae, and the Handgun

A pressure injury, a coral skull, and a choice the whole boat will remember.

How to Deal with Timmy

Timmy is the first time Static Dread: The Submarine makes you spend a bullet or refuse one. He is a sailor hurt by a high-pressure stream, missing part of his head, with algae or coral growing in the wound. Officers will call him a safety hazard. Someone will plead. The Captain’s personal handgun will appear in the fiction. This page is a spoiler-light field guide to that fork. Full ending math lives on the endings guide. Roster context lives on the Crew Hub. If you cannot draw the weapon, fix that on Controls before you walk into storage.

Demo and playtest footage already showed the scene. Retail on 14 August 2026 still uses the same moral engine: shoot on the spot, spare him, or stall long enough that the boat decides. Steam hides two trophies in the open: Safety (shoot Timmy) and Chance (spare Timmy). You will not get both in one save.

What happened to him

After the accident, Timmy is found injured in a way no corpsman can pretty up. Autopsy talk describes algae in drowned sailors and Timmy as a living host. He goes missing when he should not be able to walk. That is your cue to stop assigning him jobs on the crew management console and start treating him as a mobile leak.

Kelly’s medical read and other sailors’ fear will disagree. One voice says he is not human. Another says he is still Timmy and can be locked up. Believe that both can be true for a while. Algae in this setting is not a status effect you wait out with a bandage. It is the same family of wrongness that later produces mutated crew and seaweed-zombie talk in trailers.

Shoot

Shooting is fast, ugly, and mechanically clean. You remove a walker from the corridors, please the “mission first” officers, and take the Safety flag. People will hate you. Some later scenes ask if you will shoot them too. That echo is the point. If you came from The Lighthouse expecting a puzzle code to cure him, you will not find 357 or Omega on this boat. Wrong game.

Make sure the gun is actually in your hands. First-look players fumbled binds in the freezer while Timmy relocated. Sprint, corner, do not unload wildly near pipes. Then go restaff the roster, because you did not just kill a threat. You killed a name the others still use.

Spare

Sparing is slower and not automatically kind. Locking him up, watching him, and hunting a surface-world cure are how you pick Chance. You also keep a vector on the boat. Mutated-crew set pieces can still happen. Dream Team (save the whole crew) wants living sailors; it does not magically make algae harmless. Read crew fates if you are trying to keep Kelly, Zack, Sharon, and Michael as well.

Spare does not mean ignore. If you leave him loose because you were busy with collectibles, the story will spend him without your consent.

After the choice

Reassign jobs. Sit the next sonar watch. The North Atlantic did not pause. Timmy’s fork colors later talk about humanity versus the mission, which is the same axis the review uses when comparing this sequel to The Lighthouse. Some players find the choice smaller than it looked in the trailer. That is fair. It is still the tutorial for every later “will you fire” prompt, including mutated crew and whatever waits at a sealed Captain’s door.

If you are chasing trophies, do one dedicated shoot run and one spare run. Do not savescum in a panic on your first ending unless you already hate the scene. The game is 3–4 hours; you can afford a second watch. For the surrounding plot, return to the story walkthrough. For keeping the hull intact while you argue about Timmy, use how to survive.

Whatever you pick, pick it on purpose. The Ares has no spare moral budget for an accidental click.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which achievement is shoot versus spare?

Safety is shoot Timmy. Chance is spare Timmy. They conflict on one save.

Can I cure him on the first run?

You can look. Do not assume a Lighthouse-style keypad puzzle. Treat spare as risk, not an instant heal.

Does sparing lock the good ending?

No. Endings also care about the rest of the crew, headings, and later temple or city choices.

Why can't I pull out the gun?

Rebind aim/fire in Settings. It is not a number-row slot. See the Controls page.
