Static Dread: The Submarine Story Walkthrough

A first-run beat sheet for the Ares, with doors and watches called out.

Story Walkthrough

This is an ordered beat sheet for a first retail run of Static Dread: The Submarine. It assumes the 14 August 2026 Windows build on Steam or GOG. Demo routing will disagree; demo saves do not carry over. Mechanical deep dives stay on the Guides Hub. Ending names stay on the endings guide as much as possible. If a door will not open, you missed a log or a roster card, not a secret button.

Beat 1 — Accident

You are already in the disaster. Fire, flooding, bodies on the central stair. Follow the sailor upward. Secure the staircase compartment by lowering pressure: take the key, follow tubes to the control panel, initiate, then report on the communications panel. Sprint if a hatch is closing. Full detail: Getting Started and how to survive.

Beat 2 — Bridge and roster

The bridge briefing names the electromagnetic strike, the dead majority, the missing surface, and a reactor countdown measured in days. You receive the First Mate drive. Assign Kelly (comms/medical), Zack (navigation), Sharon (engineering), Michael (logistics) before you wander. You may assign yourself. See crew management and the Crew Hub.

Beat 3 — First sonar homework

Sit the mainframe. You cannot auto-lock. Analyze multiple contacts (often three) until a heading plan unlocks. Separate whales from hulls from unknowns. Typical orders: find a noise that leads the Ares closer to the coast, or a profile that might restore comms. Read the sonar guide if percentages confuse you.

Beat 4 — Hull and drone

An external repair drone is a common early card. Launch it from the indicated station, not from an inventory wheel. Salvage watches can recover floor objects (playtests cite NMA-237). That is story loot, not a crafting system. Keep Sharon alive if you want those jobs to stay staffed.

Beat 5 — Timmy

Timmy is found ruined, then missing, then discussed as an algae host. You will be handed a gun and a plea. Shoot (Safety) or spare (Chance). Do not stall in a freezer because you cannot find the bind — Controls. The dedicated Timmy page is the field manual. Then restaff the roster. Dead or caged, he is no longer a worker.

Beat 6 — Reactor and rumors

You still need control-room and core access. Sharon should lead; you fill in. Officers float a saboteur and a Captain who will not emerge. Investigate when a scene demands it (sealed door, Knock Knock trophy later), but do not idle the console waiting for a detective mode. Radiation choices around Zack are ending-sensitive; see crew fates.

Beat 7 — Rift and the unmapped

Sonar will offer a young tectonic rift or a contact that is not a navy profile. Following it is how late mythos (city, temple, enemy, Blackfort) enters a short game — the same jump reviewers called under-built. Evading it is how you stay a warship longer. Neither is a bug. Log the choice. You may be told you cannot reverse it.

Beat 8 — Mutated crew and late tools

Algae walkers, traps, possible electrification, possible torpedo launch (Fire and Forget). These are survival scenes, not a campaign of fights. Use how to survive. Keep counting living specialists. Dream Team needs the whole crew; Survivors only needs you at the end.

Beat 9 — Captain, cult, or coast

Late conversations spend whatever flags you already set: Timmy, Sharon forced or not, Zack’s dose, Kelly stopped or not, keys delivered, bombs loved, unknown enemy met. Do not expect Lighthouse epilogue slides. Some runs feel like a reset; that is a known criticism in the review. Take the credits, then open endings with your trophy list.

If you are stuck

  • Door still sealed: did you log the last deck?
  • No heading: did you finish the three-contact homework?
  • Nobody works: is the roster empty because someone died?
  • Gun missing: rebind, do not mash G.

Optional toys — darts, Dread Invaders, jukebox, coffee, figurine — are listed under collectibles and should not stall a first ending. For store and demo confusion, launch notes. For the next watch after credits, pick a different Timmy or rift and run the skeleton again.

This beat sheet is a rope, not a script. The Ares will still improvise once the ping talks back.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

I cannot get to the bridge.

Finish the stairwell leak: pressure panel, then communications log. Wandering will not substitute.

The heading plan never appears.

Analyze the required contacts on sonar first. Three is a common homework number in early watches.

Does this cover every ending scene?

No. It is a first-run spine. Named endings and trophies are on the Endings Guide.

Can I skip Timmy?

You can delay, but the fork is a major flag. The story will spend him if you never choose.
